Sherman’s March and St. Andrews

Would you believe that 160 years ago today, on March 7, 1865, an army of roughly 20,000 men was walking over the area between our campus and our Equestrian Center?

160 years ago today, the right wing of General William T. Sherman’s Federal Army crossed the North Carolina line, marching up the Barnes Bridge Road – with foragers ranging up to five miles on either side raiding farms and houses and bringing a four-day long reign of terror and fear into the hearts of local residents. The left wing crossing into North Carolina just below Laurel Hill and Springfield and parties visited Laurinburg and burned the railroad depot and rail yard located here as well as raiding many local homes and farms. They camped at the Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church grounds as well as other locations before leaving the county in ruin.

There are many stories and accounts of these four days when a roughly 15-20 mile long column of men and wagons – totaling over 60,000 men came through Scotland County.

Come hear the history, stories and lore of Sherman’s March through Scotland County – with dramatic representations of women along the march route.
