Black Mountain Scholars Program

Black Mountain College was an innovative, creative experimental school that operated in Black Mountain, NC from 1933 to 1957.

During the 1970s many former Black Mountain professors and students regularly visited St. Andrews. In 1974,  1989, and 2016 St. Andrews hosted a Black Mountain Festival. The 1974 event was a definitive experience for those St. Andrews students. Over the years St. Andrews became a second home to the Black Mountain tradition.

The Black Mountain Scholars Program is a scholarship-based academic opportunity featuring cross-disciplinary courses and public performances/displays/talks.

General expectations and requirements for Black Mountain Scholars

• Scholars can belong to the program for one academic year. Continuing in the program requires declaring and pursuing a major within the department.
• Scholars must take at least one BMS designated course each academic year.
• Scholars must maintain a 3.0 GPA to remain in the program.
• Scholars must participate in at least one public performance/display/talk or other public activity designated as a BMS activity and approved by participating BMS faculty during the academic year.
• Scholars must attend all BMS meetings and events.

The BMS program offers selected students an opportunity to explore ideas through creative, student-directed experimentation across the disciplines within our Division: English, history, religious studies, foreign language, art, game art, politics, creative writing, theatre, and music.
