A Night with John Charles McNeill – NC’s First Poet Laureate
January 23 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Free
The Scottish Heritage Center’s 2025 Lecture Series continues with “A Night With John Charles McNeill.” At this time of year when many celebrate the birthday of Scots Poet Robert Burns, we will explore the life and hear readings from North Carolina’s first poet laureate – who was referred to as “The Robert Burns of the South.” Come learn about McNeill’s relatively short life and hear readings of his works in local vernacular including the voices of local whites, Lumbee natives, African-Americans, as well as his imitations of Burns’ Broad Scots. The presentation will be performed by McNeill family descendant Dr. Mary Wayne Watson.
